Thula Sizwe in Concert Dress |
…and in traditional costume |
|
Thula Sizwe’s concerts come in three main types: General Concerts, School Concerts, and Gospel Concerts. Please contact Pangaea Cultural Exchange for a schedule of fees. We can be reached by telephone (Susan or William Field at 732-370-3135) or email Pangaea Cultural Exchange General Concerts: Thula Sizwe will typically perform half of a 90-minute performance in concert clothes, with the other half of the performance in traditional Zulu costume (as depicted above). According to the desires of the program organizer, this could include explanations of the origins of the performance styles and of the costumes. Songs include traditional Zulu repertoire, as well as original compositions and arrangements of other composers’ work. School Concerts: Thula Sizwe conduct many age-appropriate cultural enrichment programs in schools worldwide. The typical school performance lasts 45 minutes and concludes with the South African national anthem, Nkosi Sikelel iAfrica. We also present an example of the "gumboot dance" that emerged from the mines during th apartheid era when the men amused themselves in the evenings by developing a new competitive dance style. All performances are in concert dress and feature only secular songs. The group will model the traditional Zulu costume and discuss the meaning of its pieces. Gospel Concerts: Thula Sizwe perform an energetic routine of song and dance, with a combination of traditional songs in Zulu, English, and Afrikaans, as well as arrangements of traditional and contemporary Western sacred music and original sacred compositions. According to the desire of the program organizers, performances can be solely in concert clothing, or half in concert clothing, half in traditional costume. |
